The pecking order

Yesterday on my early morning walk an owl flew overhead and perched on a tree above me. Twit twit it went; this alerted me to its presence so I looked up and spotted it. This morning there was a chorus of woodpeckers. One gave a burst of drilling then paused. Another had a turn on a different tree and then paused. The first bird then started again and so on. Then there was more drilling, this time on another tree as it came from further in the wood.

Thought for today
Words and water are easy to pour, but impossible to recover.

I like owls but it's been years since I last saw one in the wild. As for woodpeckers I often hear them but never see them!
